CHAPTER SIX

Matthew Rivera stepped into his small home office. It was just after 11:00 at night and he’d spent a long and somewhat tiring evening with his boss and he was looking forward to at least six uninterrupted hours of sleep. The red light on his answering machine was blinking, though, and he had a strange disquieting feeling in the pit of his stomach as he hit the play button.

“Hello, this is Jackson, the manager of Willamette Environmental Services. I just got a rush job from the EPA that I thought you might be interested in because of that...discussion we had a few weeks ago. Give me a call if you need to know more.”

Matthew looked up the lab number on his Rolodex and immediately dialed it, but there was no answer and the call switched over to the answering machine. Matthew hung up and immediately called back, but the line was busy. He waited a few minutes for the answering machine to hang up and called again, but there was still no answer. He was in a real conundrum. Should he follow up on something that was most likely a wild goose chase or should he get the sleep he desperately needed? He decided to wait until the morning and went to bed.

~~~~~
At six o’clock sharp, Tyrone Farmer’s home phone rang. Tyrone was already awake with a cup of coffee in his hand, so he answered the phone after the first ring.
“Tyrone Farmer.”
“This is Willamette Environmental Services. Your test results are ready, sir.”
“Excellent. I can be there in 20 minutes. Will you still be there?”
“Sure thing, sir. I’m on double time now so I’ll stay as long as you need. By the way, the pizza was awesome. Thanks! Death By Pizza is my favorite place and it’s not cheap, either. I really appreciate it.”
“Not a problem, son. I’m on my way.”
Tyrone scribbled a quick message on a sheet of paper and ran it through his fax machine. ‘Test results are done. I’m on my way to the lab now. I’ll stop by the hotel.’
~~~~~

Matthew woke up from a deep sleep and glanced over at the clock. It was 6:15 AM. He swore under his breath because he’d intended to wake up at 5:00.

“I musta needed an extra hour…” he muttered to himself.

He got up quickly and put on a small pot of coffee, then dialed the phone number to the lab.

“Willamette Environmental Services, this is Jackson.”

“This is Matthew Rivera. You left a message for me yesterday about some EPA testing that I may be interested in. Can you elaborate on that?”

“Yes sir. Some guy came in yesterday with some soil and water samples and wanted a rush chemical analysis done on them. He said they needed the job done by today, so-”

“Where were the samples taken from?” Matthew demanded. He had a sudden knot in his stomach.

“Well, that’s the thing, sir. The samples were taken down in Lake Oswego. Right on the lake as I understand it. I wasn’t in the lab, it was my technician who took the order.
